The History of CAHM
San Diego County has seen one death to suicide nearly every day for the past twelve years. According to research done by Columbia University, roughly one in five American teenagers today have a diagnosable, treatable mental illness or potential problem with substance abuse. But of those, only one in five receives timely help. Many go untreated in their teens and young adulthood, resulting in addictions, crime, violent behavior, overdose, or suicide.
For Rex & Connie Kennemer, life changed forever when their 25-year-old son Todd took his life late in 2005. A community of friends rallied around this couple with a benefit concert in Todd's memory. The following year a mental health forum was added. Those who made the forum and concert successful have continued as a team and taken the name: Community Alliance for Healthy Minds (CAHM).
